Dr. Opitz received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University and proceeded to earn his doctorate of optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1996. Following graduation, he completed a hospital based primary care residency at the Hampton Virginia Veterans Administration Medical Center from 1996-1997.
In July 2006, Dr. Opitz accepted a full-time academic appointment at the Illinois College of Optometry where he serves as Assistant Professor in the department of Clinical Education. Prior to his academic appointment, Dr. Opitz was a partner in a multidisciplinary medical/surgical eyecare center since completion of his residency in 1997. Dr. Opitz continues to practice there in addition to his clinical education responsibilities at the College.
Dr. Opitz is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Illinois Optometric Association. He is also a member and Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. Currently, Dr. Opitz is the President of the Illinois State Chapter of the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Opitz has lectured nationally for various optometric continuing education programs and is a columnist for the Journal of the Illinois Optometric Association.
